The Geneva Event Centre is the latest Orillia landmark that could receive heritage designation.
Council Committee agreed to a staff recommendation last night (MON) and will be forwarded to Council next Monday (18th) for ratification.
That recommendation would see the former Geneva Theatre, located on West Street downtown, be put on the City's Heritage Register on the List of Undesignated Properties of Cultural Value or Interest.
Councillor Jeff Clarke says the owner -- Donald Porter -- has put in a lot of money into refurbishing the interior of the building and is now working on the exterior.
He says Porter plans to replicate the exterior to the original 1939 deco including the neon sign which he believes is last existing one in Orillia.
Clarke says the theatre is quite a landmark and Porter has done a great job in maintaining it.
He says once the work is done, the City will look at adding it to the register.
Clarke says there are number of people who have good memories of the place.
He says he can recall lining up to get into the theatre to see some of the shows.
